In recent years, the market demand of ternary batteries with high energy density is increasing, which is mainly affected by two aspects.
First, the impact of rising cobalt prices.
As we all know, cobalt is an important raw material in ternary batteries, which affects the stability and safety of the whole power battery. However, due to the scarcity of cobalt resources, as well as the Congo (Kinshasa), the main cobalt producer, its infrastructure is relatively backward, mining is difficult and costly, so that prices have been rising since 2017. Under the background of cost pressure, high nickel ternary materials for power batteries have become the trend of development.
Secondly, the national policy has raised the requirement of energy density for power batteries.
According to the requirements of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's "Medium and Long-term Development Plan of Automobile Industry", the specific energy of new energy automotive power batteries will reach more than 300 Wh/kg by 2020, striving to achieve 350 Wh/kg, the specific energy of the system will reach 260 Wh/kg, and the cost will be reduced to less than 1 yuan/Wh. By 2025, new energy vehicles will account for more than 20% of automobile production and sales, and the specific energy of power battery system will reach 350Wh/kg. It is difficult to achieve by lithium iron phosphate, so we choose the ternary direction. It is understood that the high nickel and low cobalt ternary cathode materials have obvious advantages in improving the energy density of batteries and reducing the cost of materials. Therefore, major automotive enterprises and battery manufacturers are competing to move towards the road of ternary power batteries.
According to the research forecast, using ternary 811 plus graphite, leading manufacturers are expected to achieve 250wh/kg specific energy of power cell monomer this year. Therefore, high nickel 811 is expected to become the mainstream.
